Getting around Korea: the tickets and details to sort out first

Separate the airport journey, city transport and intercity travel. They solve different problems, and a card for one does not automatically cover the others.

Start with your airport-to-hotel journey

Write down the full airport name, terminal, landing time and hotel address before comparing transport. A journey that looks convenient at midday may not suit a late arrival. Check the final departure on the operator’s current timetable and allow for immigration, baggage and finding the boarding point.

For the hotel end, look beyond the station name. Check the exit, walking route and whether stairs will be awkward with luggage. Keep a screenshot of the address in Korean. If your arrival runs late, decide in advance which alternative you will use instead of making that decision with a low phone battery.

A city transport card is useful—but it is not every ticket

VISITKOREA lists Tmoney and EZL among the reloadable transport cards available at convenience stores. Treat the card purchase and usable balance as separate things to check. Ask how to top it up, which payment methods the particular shop accepts, and whether a child or youth discount needs registration.

Do not assume your local transit balance reserves a seat on an intercity train. For longer journeys, check the operator’s ticketing process separately. Keep a way to pay for small purchases if a top-up machine or shop does not accept your preferred overseas card.

Compare the whole journey, not just time on board

JourneyWhat to verifyCommon planning mistake
Airport to hotelTerminal, final departure, luggage and the last walkChoosing a service without checking arrival time
City sightseeingCorrect station exit, transfers and accessible routeSaving only an attraction’s English name
Intercity trainDeparture station, destination, date, seat and refund termsGoing to Seoul Station when the ticket says Yongsan
Intercity busExact departure and arrival terminalAssuming every terminal in a city is interchangeable

A faster train may still leave you with a local transfer at the destination. Compare departure-to-hotel time and the return trip, especially for an evening festival. Read the confirmation carefully rather than relying on the route name you originally searched.

Make a small offline travel folder

  • Your accommodation’s Korean address and phone number.
  • Tickets showing the date, departure station or terminal and service number.
  • The destination’s Korean name and an alternative meeting point.
  • A screenshot of the route back and the operator’s disruption information.
  • The booking reference and cancellation terms, stored privately.

When a booking site rejects a payment, a repeated attempt is not proof that no charge exists. Check the booking status and your payment record before buying the same journey again. An English interface also does not guarantee that every foreign-issued card will work.

If you are travelling with children or limited mobility

Reduce the number of transfers before worrying about shaving a few minutes off the route. Check lifts, the distance from the correct exit, and whether the attraction involves slopes or stairs. A map’s shortest walk may not be the best luggage or wheelchair route.

Keep a buffer before a reserved departure. For Jeonju, for example, the station and Hanok Village are separate stops; the final city transfer belongs in your plan. Use the dedicated guide below to work through that journey.
